An artistic exploration of the political and emotional stakes of translation in the context of asylum law, through the lens of rarely heard testimonies: those of interpreters.

The Interpreter Dis/appears stems from an investigation conducted between 2019 and 2023 by curator, editor, and translator Virginie Bobin, focusing on both professional and volunteer interpreters and translators, as well as representatives from the state and organizations working with exiled individuals navigating asylum application procedures in France. By redirecting attention to the voices of interpreters—rarely visible figures in this ecosystem—the project delves into the ambiguous role of translation at the intersection of those who govern and those governed by asylum law. Within such a controlled environment, can the act of translation, with all its complexities, still express fleeting gestures of solidarity or even resistance? Through the exchanges prompted by these questions, the book seeks to reframe the prevailing public and political discourse on asylum, harnessing the embodied experiences of a small group of interpreters as an alternative lens to reveal the underlying power dynamics at play. It also probes the ethical and political potential of translation. The Interpreter Dis/appears unfolds across a variety of theatrical, artistic, and theoretical writing, alongside insightful contributions from artists and researchers who open up different perspectives for understanding and activating these issues.

Une recherche artistique sur les enjeux politiques et affectifs de la traduction dans le cadre du droit d'asile en France, au prisme de témoignages rarement entendus : ceux des interprètes.

L'interprète dis/paraît est l'aboutissement d'une enquête menée entre 2019 et 2023 par la curatrice, éditrice et traductrice Virginie Bobin auprès d'interprètes et traducteur·ices professionnel·les et bénévoles, ainsi que de représentant·es de l'État et d'associations travaillant auprès de personnes exilées prises dans des procédures de demande d'asile en France. En mettant au centre la parole des interprètes, figures souvent invisibilisés de cet écosystème, il s'agit d'interroger le rôle ambigu de la traduction à l'intersection de celles et ceux qui gouvernent et de celles et ceux qui sont gouverné·es par le droit d'asile. Dans un cadre aussi contraint, est-il encore possible de manifester, depuis l'exercice ambivalent de la traduction, des gestes fugitifs de solidarité ou de résistance ? En restituant les échanges nés de ces questions, le livre tente de déplacer la focale habituelle des discours sur l'asile dans le débat public et politique en faisant de l'expérience incarnée d'un petit nombre d'interprètes un autre révélateur des rapports de pouvoir et de domination en jeu, tout en éprouvant le potentiel éthique et politique de la traduction. L'interprète dis/paraît déploie différentes formes d’écriture théâtrale, artistique et théorique, ainsi qu’un ensemble de contributions d’artistes et de chercheur·euses qui ouvrent d'autres pistes de lecture et d’activation.
